What to Expect From Our Application Process

Step 1: Application

When you apply for life insurance from TIAA-CREF Life Insurance Company (TIAA-CREF Life) over the phone, our Insurance Representatives will walk you through the process of submitting your application. This should only take a few minutes and will include selecting a beneficiary for the policy. You may also be asked some general questions about your health history. You will not be charged for anything at this time.

If you are ready to apply for a life insurance policy, please call TIAA-CREF Life Insurance Company at 877 276-9429 – or choose to have an Insurance Representative call you. Our Insurance Representatives will walk you through the process of submitting your application.

Step 2: Medical Exam

Once your application has been submitted, a representative from ExamOne, a paramedical company contracted by TIAA-CREF Life, will contact you to schedule an appointment for your medical examination. This no-cost exam is usually completed in 30 minutes and can be conducted at your convenience — at your home, at your place of employment, or at one of their exam offices. The results will allow our underwriters to place you in the best possible underwriting classification.

The examination will include medical history and physical measurements including height and weight. Additionally, they will collect samples of blood and a urine specimen. You should also be prepared to provide the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any treating physicians and a list of all medications and dosages to the paramedical examiner at the time of the exam.

Step 3: Review Process

After your medical exam has been completed, the results will be sent to our underwriting department. Our underwriters will review both your application and the results of your medical exam to determine if you qualify for coverage, your risk classification and which premium rate you qualify for. Don’t be concerned if this review period takes a little while — we’re working hard to find you the best rate available.

Step 4: Final Steps

Once our underwriters have made a decision on your application, your Insurance Representative will contact you again. At this point they will be able to let you know if your application has been approved and will let you know the final premium for which you qualified. If you are happy with this rate, they will help you complete the application process and make your first payment. After these steps, your life insurance protection will be in place!
