Robert Leary is President of TIAA Asset Management, an $866 billion AUM global asset management company (as of 3/31/15) with approximately 2,000 employees. In addition, he is an EVP of TIAA-CREF and member of the five person Office of the CEO and the firm’s Executive Management Team.
Mr. Leary joined TIAA-CREF in 2013 and is responsible for all aspects of TIAA’s Asset Management business which includes TIAA-CREF Asset Management (“TCAM”) and Nuveen Investments. He leads a management team that continues to build on TIAA Asset Management’s history of strong investment performance, innovation and client focus.
Prior to TIAA, Mr. Leary was CEO at ING Investment Management Americas and ING Insurance U.S. At ING U.S. he was responsible for the investment management, retirement, insurance and annuity businesses. Mr. Leary began his career as a lawyer for White & Case in New York. He then moved into the financial services arena with J.P. Morgan & Co., where he led the development of investment strategies for pension plans and investment managers. After J.P. Morgan, he helped build AIG Financial Products’ investment manager business and led all of its client-facing businesses including marketing and distribution globally.
Mr. Leary is a member of the Board of Directors of Intact Financial Corporation and serves on the Audit and Risk Management Committees. He also serves on the Boards of AmeriCares, a nonprofit, global health and disaster-relief organization and Friends of Acadia, a non-profit organization that works to ensure the preservation and protection of Acadia National park and its surrounding communities. He has participated as a speaker and/or panelist in numerous industry panels and conferences and has frequently appeared in major financial media. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Union College and his law degree from Fordham University School of Law.
