Tim HopperTim Hopper is a managing director and chief economist for TIAA-CREF, a diversified financial services company with over $851 billion under management. He has over 20 years of experience modeling, writing and speaking about the global economy.

As TIAA-CREF’s leading economic advisor, Mr. Hopper is responsible for articulating the firm’s economic views and providing guidance that informs the firm’s investment portfolios and asset allocation strategies. A prolific writer and public speaker, Mr. Hopper shares insights regarding the factors driving economic and market trends, the implications of key economic indicators, the impact of market-moving events and expectations regarding the US and global economies with consumers, business leaders and institutional investors.

Prior to joining TIAA-CREF, Mr. Hopper held various leadership positions in global banking and real estate, focused primarily on economic forecasting, portfolio construction and risk analysis. He served as a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas for over 10 years. Throughout his career, Mr. Hopper has taught economics at the University of Houston with a specialty in international finance, interest rate policy and behavioral finance.

An active member of the American Economic Association, American Financial Association and the National Association for Business Economics, Mr. Hopper also provides frequent commentary to the media, including the Associated Press, Bloomberg News, Reuters, National Public Radio, New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Hopper holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Houston, an M.S. in economics from Louisiana State University and a B.A. in economics from Baylor University. A licensed pilot, Mr. Hopper is also a passionate supporter of Angel Flight, a non-profit organization that provides transportation to medical services for patients who are critically ill and whose families are financially distressed.
