Who We Serve

TIAA was founded in 1918 to provide retirement security to university faculty. Today, while higher education is still at our core, we meet the financial needs of clients throughout the nonprofit world.

In all, we serve 3.7 million individuals and more than 15,000 institutions in the academic, medical, governmental, research and cultural fields. As of December 31, 2010, we were investing more than $450 billion on behalf of our clients, with the goal of helping them achieve lifetime financial security.
