How We Invest: Equity Investing

While many investment companies use teams to manage each portfolio, TIAA-CREF uses a collaborative team approach, bringing the maximum degree of expertise to bear on each investment decision, while encouraging independent thinking and analysis.

Bottom-up Approach to Stock Selection

The work of TIAA-CREF’s analysts is central to our equity investment process. Our analysts are professionals who’ve spent many years specializing in one industry sector. Using rigorous in-depth valuation processes, they recommend stocks that appear to be mispriced — either too expensive to own, or too cheap to pass up.

Our analysts look at companies from the bottom up, evaluating their market share, current cash flow, the strength of their management teams and the companies’ future prospects. The goal is to separate the market’s expectations about companies from their real fundamental strengths and weaknesses, and to find value and growth potential that other investors have missed.

TIAA-CREF’s portfolio managers have the depth of experience needed to put our analysts’ recommendations to use on behalf of our clients’ investment goals. Our portfolio managers are seasoned stock pickers who take a broad view of the market. Working closely with other team members — including managers of other asset classes — TIAA-CREF’s portfolio managers assess each recommended stock using both the bottom-up fundamentals approach to valuation and pricing guidelines provided by our analysts, and proprietary quantitative screening techniques.
