What to expect
When you apply for life insurance, you’ll be asked to participate in a health assessment before coverage can take effect. The insurance company will ask you questions about your health and, at its expense, arrange for a physical exam with a medical professional. In some instances this underwriting process may include a background check, or require a statement from your physician. Depending on your circumstances, this process can span several weeks or longer. It’s very important to tell the truth at this time. A false statement could delay or even prevent payment of a claim.
You’ll also be asked to designate a beneficiary for your policy. This should be reviewed periodically throughout your lifetime — particularly when your circumstances change — to ensure that benefits are paid quickly and according to your wishes.
You should also review your insurance needs every three years or so; as your circumstances change, so should your coverage.
