The federal wire (or Fed Wire) transfer service is used by Federal Reserve Banks and the Treasury for large dollar, time-sensitive payments. The advantage of Fed Wire is that it offers immediate funds transfer, if received before 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfer service is a computer-based, batch-oriented clearing and settlement facility for the interchange of electronic debits and credits among financial institutions. With ACH transfers, payments have a final settlement one day after transfer and are significantly less expensive than Fed Wire.
