TIAA-CREF, the leading provider of retirement savings products and services in the academic, medical and cultural fields, today announced the appointment of Cleve L. Killingsworth, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, to the Board of Overseers of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA) and the College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF).
The Board of Overseers, a New York not-for-profit corporation, consists of seven members and wholly owns the stock of TIAA. Overseers annually elect the Trustees of TIAA. Trustees of CREF are elected annually by CREF participants. Mr. Killingsworth will complete the seven-year term of Arthur Levitt, who previously retired.

Mr. Killingsworth leads one of the largest independent, not-for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in the country, with three million members. Previously, he was President and CEO of Health Alliance Plan (HAP) in Detroit, one of Michigan’s largest managed-care
companies. Mr. Killingsworth also served as the Senior Vice President of Insurance and Managed Care for the Henry Ford Health System.
Before joining HAP, Mr. Killingsworth was President of Kaiser Permanente’s Central East Division, which oversees the Mid-Atlantic States and Ohio. Mr. Killingsworth also served as Senior Vice President of health care operations for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Rochester, New York.
Mr. Killingsworth has lectured at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center and was an adjunct professor in health services administration at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a faculty
member of the Harvard School of Public Health and serves on the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows.
He is also a founding member of the Executive Leadership Council, an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit corporation based in Washington, DC, that seeks to provide African-American executives with a leadership advisory forum on business, economic and public
policy issues.
Mr. Killingsworth is currently a trustee of both Babson College and Boston University, an overseer of the Museum of Fine Arts, and a director of Travelers, Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Public
Health degree from Yale University.
